Leave it to my sister-in-law to create a new twist with Flat Stanley. For those who don't know, Flat Stanley is a story about a little boy who gets flattened by a bulletin board and then realizes that he'll fit into an envelope so he mails himself to visit relatives. Many schools do Flat Stanley projects. The children draw themselves and mail their flat people to relatives or friends across the country. This is typically done to learn about geography and the United States.
My youngest DD's second grade class has been learning about the postal system. They have created their own postal system within the school. Several second grade classrooms take turns sorting and delivering the mail throughout the school. So for Spring Break they created Flat Stanleys and used the US mail to send them to friends and relatives. Youngest DD mailed hers to her cousin who was visiting their mutual aunt and uncle across the country. Although they were sent fairly early in the week it still took a week for it to arrive at the destination. (Another great lesson from the US postal system). By the time "Flat Stanley" arrived the cousins had already done a majority of their site-seeing activities. So "Flat Stanley" got digitized. My sister-in-law scanned the drawing and created an overlay with a clear background. She then dropped the photo into most of the pictures that had been taken already.
So we have a life sized "Flat Stanley" with the cousins.
"Flat Stanley" on a building.
"Flat Stanley" with the gorillas.
And "Flat Stanley" with the real "Flat Stanley" in the background.
Once that was done, they got really creative. She made several copies of the scanned "Flat Stanley" and changed the facial expression on many. Here's one - apparently the Bionicles no longer wanted to take turns with the Wii remote.
